Every lift kit installation needs an alignment. Not most. Not just the big lifts. Every one - including 2-inch leveling kits. A shop that installs your lift and hands you the keys without aligning it has given you an unfinished job, and the bill for finishing it will show up in your tires.
Here is why this is non-negotiable, what actually moves when you lift a truck, and what skipping the alignment costs in real dollars.
What a Lift Kit Does to Your Alignment
Your truck's steering geometry was engineered around one ride height: stock. Three angles - caster, camber, and toe - were all set assuming the suspension sits where the factory put it. Raise the truck 2, 4, or 6 inches and all three move:
- Caster drops. On a solid-axle truck (Super Duty, Ram HD, Wrangler), lifting tilts the entire axle and steering knuckle assembly, reducing the caster angle that makes your steering self-center. On IFS trucks, taller springs or spacers change the control arm angles with the same result.
- Camber shifts. Control arms now operate at steeper angles, usually tipping the tops of the front tires inward (negative camber). The tire stops sitting flat on the road and the inner edge takes the load.
- Toe changes. The tie rods follow the suspension up, and their new operating angle points the wheels slightly in or out. Toe is the single fastest tire killer of the three.
None of this is a defect in your lift kit. It is geometry - it happens on every truck, with every brand, at every lift height. The fix is a post-lift alignment with specs corrected for the new ride height. If you want the deeper mechanics of each angle, read caster, camber and toe explained.
Skip It and Your Tires Pay First
Run the math on a typical build. A set of 35x12.50R20 all-terrains costs $1,400-$1,800 installed. Properly aligned, they should deliver 40,000-50,000 miles. With post-lift toe off by half a degree - a completely typical error - each tire drags sideways roughly 25 feet for every mile driven. The tread feathers, the edges scallop, and the set is done at 12,000-15,000 miles.
That is $1,500 of rubber destroyed to avoid a service that costs $120-$200 - and that is included free with the install at a competent shop. Lifted trucks on big tires do not get cheap second chances; 37s cost more than 35s, and the wear accelerates with every pound of tire hanging off a misaligned knuckle.
Then Your Steering Gets Worse
Low caster is the signature handling problem of a lifted truck that skipped its alignment. Caster is what makes the steering return to center after a turn and hold a line on the highway. Lose a few degrees and the truck stops driving itself down the road - you make constant small corrections, crosswinds push it around, and grooved pavement makes it hunt.
On solid-axle trucks it can escalate further. Low caster plus a worn track bar plus one good bump is the classic recipe for death wobble - the violent front-end oscillation that forces you to slow to a stop. An alignment with corrected caster does not guarantee you will never see death wobble, but uncorrected caster is one of its main ingredients. Then Your Parts Wear Out Early
Misalignment loads the front end unevenly through every mile. Ball joints rated for 80,000-100,000 miles develop play at half that. Tie rod ends, wheel bearings, and track bar bushings follow. Each failure makes the alignment worse, which accelerates the next failure - a $600-$1,200 repair cycle that repeats until the geometry is actually corrected.
It also costs fuel. Tires that scrub instead of roll typically cost 1-2 mpg, which on a diesel doing 15,000 miles a year is several hundred dollars annually.
Why Some Shops Skip It Anyway
Two reasons. Either they do not have an alignment rack that fits a lifted truck on 35s - common at general repair shops that install the occasional lift - or they have a rack but only know factory specs. The second is sneakier: the truck technically "got an alignment," but the machine's database targets assume stock ride height. Setting a 6-inch-lifted Super Duty to stock caster leaves it driving like a shopping cart.
When you get a lift quote, ask two questions: Is the alignment included in this price? and Do you set corrected specs for the lift height? If either answer is fuzzy, get the lift installed somewhere else.
What a Proper Post-Lift Alignment Looks Like

- Baseline measurement of caster, camber, and toe at the new ride height
- Corrected targets for your lift height - typically 4-6 degrees caster on a solid axle, near-zero camber, slight toe-in for larger tires
- Adjustment with the right hardware - adjustable control arms, cam bolts, or caster shims as the kit requires
- Before-and-after printout so you can see the numbers
- Road test for straight tracking and a centered wheel
One more thing most owners do not hear: plan on a settle-in alignment 500-1,000 miles after a big lift. New springs compress slightly and bushings seat, shifting the angles a touch from day one. It is a quick visit and it locks in the tire life you paid for.
