Caster, camber, and toe are the three angles that decide how your truck steers, how stable it feels at 70 mph, and how long your tires last. They are also the three numbers on the alignment printout most owners never look at.
If you drive a lifted or leveled truck, you cannot afford to ignore them - because your lift changed all three, and whether the shop corrected them properly is the difference between a truck that drives like it should and one that eats a $1,500 set of tires in a year. Here is each angle in plain English, what your lift did to it, and what the numbers should look like.

Camber: How Flat the Tire Sits
Stand in front of your truck and look at the front tires. Camber is how much they tilt in or out at the top. Tops leaning toward the engine is negative camber; tops leaning away is positive camber; perfectly vertical is zero.
Trucks want camber near zero - the full width of that expensive tread flat on the pavement. A street car might run negative camber for cornering grip, but a 7,000-pound truck on 35s wants its contact patch square.
What bad camber does: the tilted tire rides on one edge. Negative camber wears the inner edge - invisible unless you crouch behind the wheel and look - and the first sign most owners get is cord showing on a tire that looks fine from the driver's seat. Camber problems also make the truck follow road crown and grooves.
Caster: Why Your Steering Self-Centers
Caster is the hardest angle to picture and the most important one on a lifted truck. Viewed from the side, the steering pivot axis - from upper ball joint down to lower - is not vertical. It leans back toward the cab. That backward lean is positive caster.
The everyday example is a shopping cart wheel: the pivot sits ahead of where the wheel touches the ground, so the wheel trails behind and automatically straightens out. Positive caster gives your truck the same behavior - the steering returns to center after a turn and the truck holds a straight line without constant correction.
What low caster does: the self-centering disappears. The truck wanders, feels floaty at highway speed, and needs both hands on the wheel on a windy day. On solid-axle trucks, low caster is one of the main ingredients in death wobble. Uneven caster - left side different from right - makes the truck pull toward the side with less.
Toe: The Tire Killer
Look down at your front tires from above. Toe is whether they point straight ahead, pigeon-toed inward (toe-in), or splayed outward (toe-out). It is measured in fractions of an inch or fractions of a degree, and it is the angle with the most brutal effect on tire life.
Here is the math that should scare you: a tire toed out by just half a degree gets dragged sideways roughly 25 feet for every mile the truck drives. Over 12,000 miles, that tire has been scrubbed sideways more than 50 miles. The tread feathers - sharp edges on one side of each tread block - and the tire is finished in a quarter of its rated life.
Trucks run slight toe-in (about 1/16 to 1/8 inch total) because suspension bushings and joints deflect under load; what is set static becomes straight at speed. Zero or negative static toe becomes toe-out on the road, which means darty steering and fast wear.
What a Lift Kit Does to All Three
Lifting a truck rotates its steering geometry. The same change that gains you ground clearance moves every angle:
- Caster drops. On a solid axle, the axle rotates as the springs get taller; on IFS, the control arms angle down more steeply. Either way, the steering axis stands up straighter and you lose the self-centering lean.
- Camber goes negative. Steeper control arm angles tip the tire tops inward.
- Toe moves. The tie rods now operate at a new angle, and where they point the wheels changes with them.
This happens on every lifted truck, with every kit brand, at every height - 2-inch level or 8-inch lift, only the magnitude differs. It is why every lift kit installation needs an alignment, and why that alignment must use corrected targets rather than the factory database numbers.
Target Specs for Lifted Trucks
Every truck and lift combination is different, but these are the ranges we set lifted trucks to at LR Wheels N Lifts:
- Caster (solid axle - Super Duty, Ram HD, Wrangler): 4-6 degrees positive, left and right within 0.5 degrees of each other
- Caster (IFS - F-150, Silverado, Ram 1500, Tundra): 3-5 degrees positive, matched side to side
- Camber: 0 to -0.5 degrees - as close to zero as the hardware allows
- Toe: 1/16 to 1/8 inch total toe-in, increased slightly for taller, heavier tires
Reaching these numbers on a lifted truck sometimes requires hardware the factory never fitted: adjustable upper control arms, offset cam bolts, or caster shims. This is the real reason chain shops struggle with lifted trucks - their racks fit the truck poorly and their parts bins do not include the correction hardware. How to Read Your Alignment Printout
Every proper alignment ends with a before-and-after printout. Thirty seconds of reading tells you whether you got what you paid for:
- After values in range. Each angle's after column should sit inside the acceptable range. On a lifted truck, ask whether the range shown is factory or corrected for your lift - if the tech cannot answer, that tells you something.
- Caster matched side to side. Left and right within about half a degree. A bigger split means the truck will pull.
- Total toe slightly positive. A small toe-in number. Zero or negative on a truck is a red flag.
- Anything left red. If an angle could not be brought into spec, the printout shows it - and the shop should have explained why (seized adjuster, worn part, or missing correction hardware) before charging you.
