285/75R17 Tires for Lifted Trucks in Tampa, FL

285/75R17 is the most popular overland and serious-build midsize-truck tire size in North America. At 33.8 inches tall and 11.4 inches wide on a 17-inch wheel, it gives a Tacoma, 4Runner, Wrangler, or Gladiator about an inch of additional ground clearance over stock and a meaningfully more aggressive stance, but in a metric profile that fits stock-flare fenders without trimming on most trucks running a 2-inch leveling kit. The 17-inch wheel size means roughly 5 inches of sidewall, which is exactly what overlanders and daily wheelers want for compliance over rough terrain and airing-down capability for sand and rocks. Brand support in this size is exceptional because it's the most-bought overland size: Toyo Open Country A/T III is the premium A/T pick (and a long-time TRD Pro favorite), BFG KO2 is the proven workhorse, Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is the snowflake-rated value choice, Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT covers the more aggressive A/T market, Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 is the smooth-riding choice, and Toyo Open Country M/T handles dedicated mud-terrain duty. The size is also seen on Ford F-150s with aftermarket 17-inch wheels and on older F-250/F-350 Super Duty XL trims that came on 17-inch wheels stock.

Will 285/75R17 fit my truck?

The 'metric near-34' for Tacomas, 4Runners, and Wranglers. Slightly taller than a stock 33 and meaningfully narrower than a 33x12.50, so it looks lifted but tucks cleanly into stock-flare fenders on midsize trucks. A favorite for overlanders and daily-driver wheelers.

Common fitments

  • Toyota Tacoma (2016-2026) with 2-3 inch lift
  • Toyota 4Runner with 2-3 inch lift
  • Jeep Wrangler JL/JK with 2 inch lift
  • Jeep Gladiator JT with 2 inch lift
  • Ford F-150 with 17 inch aftermarket wheels and leveling kit
  • Older F-250/F-350 Super Duty (XL/XLT trims on 17s)

Particularly popular on Tampa-area Tacomas and 4Runners that overland the Florida National Scenic Trail or do weekend trips to the Suwannee River area. The metric width handles wet I-275 better than a 12.5 flotation tire, the 33.8-inch diameter clears most flooded streets after a tropical system, and the load range C version of the Toyo A/T III in this size gives one of the best ride-quality-vs-aggressive-look trade-offs available.

285/75R17 questions, answered straight

The questions we get most often from Tampa truck owners shopping this size.

What's the difference between 285/70R17 and 285/75R17?
Same width (11.2-11.4 inches), different sidewall height. The 285/70R17 is 32.7 inches tall; the 285/75R17 is 33.8 inches tall. The 75-series has about a half inch more sidewall, which gives slightly better off-road compliance, slightly more aggressive stance, and slightly more rolling diameter. On a Tacoma TRD Pro, the 285/70R17 fits stock; the 285/75R17 needs a 1-2 inch leveling kit to clear at full lock without rub.
Will 285/75R17 fit my Tacoma with a leveling kit?
On a 2016+ Tacoma TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro, a 2-2.5 inch front leveling kit (Bilstein 5100s set to position 2 or a Toytec spacer) clears 285/75R17 with stock offset wheels and minor fender liner trim. On a base SR or SR5 with smaller stock 16-inch wheels, you'll need to swap to 17-inch aftermarket wheels first.
Is 285/75R17 a good overland tire size?
It's one of the most popular overland sizes in North America, and for good reason. The 33.8-inch diameter gives meaningful ground clearance gain, the 11.4-inch width is narrow enough to not destroy MPG or hydroplane on wet roads, and the 17-inch wheel gives plenty of sidewall for airing down. Toyo Open Country A/T III, BFG KO2, and Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT in this size are go-to choices for overlanders building 4Runners, Tacomas, and Gladiators.
Why pick 285/75R17 over 33x12.50R17?
Both are about 33-34 inches tall. The 285/75R17 is 11.4 inches wide; the 33x12.50R17 is 12.5 inches wide. The narrower metric tire is typically lighter, gets better fuel economy, hydroplanes less in heavy rain, and looks more tucked under stock fender flares. The wider flotation tire looks chunkier, floats better in soft sand, and looks more proportional with aftermarket fender flares. For overlanders and daily-drivers, 285/75R17. For dedicated trail rigs with aftermarket flares, 33x12.50R17.
What load range should I buy in 285/75R17?
For a Tacoma, 4Runner, Wrangler, or Gladiator, load range C or D is the right call. It rides better, weighs less, and is plenty of capacity for non-towing duty. For a half-ton or heavy overland build with a rooftop tent, drawer system, and gear, load range E gives you the heat capacity and load rating you need. Avoid load range E on a Tacoma unless you actually need the load capacity; the ride suffers.
