285/70R17 Tires for Lifted Trucks in Tampa, FL

285/70R17 is the Wrangler Rubicon and midsize-truck workhorse. It's the factory tire on every JL and JT Rubicon, which means it's also the most-replaced tire size in the Jeep aftermarket. The metric size (285 wide, 70 series, on a 17-inch wheel) gives a 32.7-inch overall diameter and 11.2-inch section width, making it a true 33-inch tire by overall height. On a Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro, this size fits with a 1-2 inch leveling kit and is the dominant 'first upgrade' for Tacoma owners. Brand support is exceptional: BFGoodrich KO2 and KO3 are the proven all-terrain pick (and a long-time Rubicon factory tire), Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is the value-and-snowflake choice, Toyo Open Country A/T III and Nitto Ridge Grappler cover the premium A/T and hybrid markets, and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac and Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT round out the more aggressive A/T options. The size's biggest virtue is that it's a direct OE replacement on so many vehicles that fitment is rarely a question; brand and tread pattern are the real decisions.

Will 285/70R17 fit my truck?

The midsize-truck and Wrangler Rubicon factory-equivalent. This is the OE size on the Wrangler Rubicon and a near-OE upgrade for Tacomas and 4Runners. Buyers pick it to maintain factory tire diameter when going off-road oriented or to upgrade tread on a Rubicon without changing fitment.

Common fitments

  • Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon (factory size on Rubicon trim)
  • Jeep Gladiator JT Rubicon
  • Toyota Tacoma (2016-2026) with stock or 2 inch lift
  • Toyota 4Runner with leveling kit
  • Ford F-150 with 17-inch wheels and leveling kit
  • Older F-250/F-350 Super Duty stock height

Excellent Tacoma daily-driver size for the Tampa Bay area. Narrow enough (11.2 inches) to handle wet I-275 without hydroplaning, tall enough (32.7 inches) to wade through the inch of standing water that builds up at every Tampa intersection during a summer thunderstorm. The 17-inch wheel and tall sidewall save your wheels from the constant pothole hits on Hillsborough Avenue.

285/70R17 questions, answered straight

The questions we get most often from Tampa truck owners shopping this size.

Is 285/70R17 the same size as the factory Wrangler Rubicon tires?
Yes. The Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon and Gladiator Rubicon come from the factory on 285/70R17 (a 33-inch tire). Replacing them in the same size is a direct fit with zero modifications. This is one of the few sizes where 'OE replacement' literally means OE replacement.
Will 285/70R17 fit my Toyota Tacoma stock?
On a 2016+ Tacoma TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro, 285/70R17 fits with a 1-2 inch front leveling kit and minor inner liner trim at full lock. Stock height clearance is tight; some owners run them stock with rubbing they consider acceptable. On a Tacoma SR or SR5 with smaller stock wheels, you'll need to swap to 17-inch aftermarket wheels first.
What's the difference between 285/70R17 and 33x12.50R17?
Both are about 33 inches tall, but the 285/70R17 is 11.2 inches wide while the 33x12.50R17 is 12.5 inches wide. The metric 285 looks more tucked and clean, fits more vehicles without rub, and is typically lighter and cheaper. The flotation 33 looks chunkier and floats better in soft sand. For a Tacoma or Rubicon staying within stock fenders, pick the 285. For a build with aftermarket fender flares and 4-6 inches of lift, the 33 looks more proportional.
Do I need a lift for 285/70R17 on a Wrangler Rubicon?
No. The JL Rubicon and Gladiator Rubicon come on this size from the factory. You can install any 285/70R17 in any tread pattern with no lift, no fender work, no offset change. This is why it's so popular as a tread upgrade size: install KO2s or Ridge Grapplers and you're done.
Is 285/70R17 too wide for a daily-driver Tacoma?
No. At 11.2 inches it's only marginally wider than the factory Tacoma TRD Pro 265/70R17. It tracks well on highways, doesn't follow rain grooves badly, and gets reasonable fuel economy. The bigger issue with putting any 33-inch tire on a Tacoma is the rolling diameter, not the width: you'll feel a small power loss because the Tacoma's V6 isn't a high-torque engine, but it's perfectly drivable.
